Police called repeatedly on them to turn back warning them that if they persisted he would give orders to fire. As a warning a shot was fired into the ground but the crowd took no notice and tried

to force their way.

Orders to fire were then given by Assistant Superintendent of Police and four shots were fired. Three men were killed and eight injured. A public judicial enquiry will as soon as possible be held. In reply to his enquiries

I have infomed Civil Governor of Oxaten that I am prepared to consider payment of compensation to the relatives of the men killed.

Secretary Churchill to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 6th of March, No.D.O.T./5380/U.B., regarding the strike in Hong Kong, and to inform you that as you will now be aware certain official announcements on the situation have recently been issued from this office to the Press

and that a full statement was made in the House of Commons on this subject on the 6th of Karch in reply to a question by Mr. G. Stewart, M.F.

2. Mr. Churchill considers that any further public announcements that may be necessary should be

if that is nade preferably in the House of Commons or, not possible, by communications to the Press from this office. He would be glad therefore if you would refer enquiries to statements so made.
